A student’s day

Nodir Makhmudov is a student. He lives in a new house. As a rule he gets up at 7 o’clock. He does gymnastics in front of the open window and goes into the bathroom. In the bathroom he shaves, washes with cold or warm water and soap, and sometimes if he has enough time he takes a bath. He dries himself with one of the towels that are in the bathroom, and goes back to his room, where he dresses and brushes his hair in front of the looking-glass which is on the small table near his bed.

In ten minutes or so he is ready for breakfast. After breakfast he puts on his coat, takes his bag and leaves the house. As a rule he is very much in a hurry and walks fast to the bus stop. He is in a hurry because he does not want to be late for the first lecture, which begins at 8 o’clock. As the Institute where he studies is not very far away from his house it does not take him long to get there. He studies at Samarkand State Institute of Foreign Languages. He is a student of Roman-German philology faculty and he is a second-year student. The course he takes includes Social Sciences and two foreign languages – German and English. Social Sciences and English have always been his favorites but his chief interest is English. His dream has always been to become a teacher. He has chosen this profession as his future occupation a long time ago. As a child, he listened to parents discussing professional matters in English. Little by little, he got interested in the subject and began thinking of English as his prospective occupation.

That is the reason why he has chosen the profession of a teacher, which gives plenty of opportunities to help people in teaching English. He usually gets to the Institute a few minutes before 8. He takes off his coat and leaves it in the cloakroom downstairs.

Then he goes up stairs to the lecture – room that is on the 3rd floor. The lectures at the Institute start at 8 in the morning and end at 145 in the afternoon. At about 11 o’clock students have their lunch in the student’s canteen. For their lunch they usually have hot soup and some vegetables, and also a cup of tea or coffee. After lunch Nodir together with some other students from the same group go into their lecture hall and have English and German lessons. When the lessons are over at 145 the students go home. Nodir goes home by bus but if it is a fine day he walks. Sometimes Nodir has to attend a meeting or is busy with his social work and he has to stay at the Institute till 4 or 5 o’clock in the afternoon. When he comes home he has a short rest and then goes to the library, where he spends about an hour or two, reading books and newspapers or getting ready to make a report on some special subject. When he returns home he still has enough time to learn his English and German lessons, listen to the news over the radio. He also helps to his mother to do some work about the house. At about 10 o’clock Nodir says "Goodnight" to his parents and goes to bed. He generally sleeps 7 or 8 hours. Sometimes in his free time on Sundays Nodir goes to the students’ club or to the cinema.
